A one-day workshop on Ethics, Good Clinical and Laboratory Practices was organized at Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences. More than 100 students from the 2023 batch of postgraduate (PG), DM, and MCh programs of the institute actively participated in the event.
The workshop was inaugurated by Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences’s Principal, Dr. Ashok Nayak and Director Dr. Manoj Gupta, through the joint lighting of the lamp.
Dr. Lalit Kumar Varshney, HOD, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, delivered a detailed lecture on "Ethical Responsibilities in Medical Services and the Role of Doctors." He emphasized the importance of adhering to professional conduct, patient responsibilities, and strict compliance with Medical Council guidelines.
Subject experts provided in-depth insights into key aspects such as laboratory quality, transparency in reporting, accuracy in sample handling, and confidentiality of patient data. The session aimed to acquaint students with the importance of ethics in medicine and nuances of modern lab protocols to enable them to deliver high-quality healthcare in the future.
Towards the end of the workshop, participants had their queries addressed by experts, offering them valuable practical knowledge.
Dr. Shalu Bawa from the Pharmacology Department elaborated on prescription-related guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission. She highlighted the importance of clear and legible handwritten prescriptions, advising that generic names of medicines should be used. She also stressed that allopathic doctors are legally permitted to prescribe only allopathic medicines and suggested drugs from other medical systems is not permissible.
The workshop featured detailed discussions on topics such as laboratory management, data confidentiality, transparency in reporting, and professional conduct. It provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the ethical and technical dimensions of medical practice, valuable for their future careers.
Renowned senior physician Prof. Dr. Nardeep Naithani spoke on “Good Clinical Practices and Doctor-Patient Relationships,” emphasizing that a patient opens up only when they trust the doctor to listen sincerely and patiently.
Dr. Pratibha Singh discussed key highlights of the Code of Medical Ethics 2002 and 2023, underlining the importance of doctor-patient communication, confidentiality, and transparency.
Dr. Suman Bala delivered a lecture on patients’ human rights, while Dr. Hari Om Khandelwal explained the legal and medical dimensions of euthanasia in India. Dr. Rajesh Sahu discussed the patient’s consent and confidentiality in the context of National Human Rights Commission guidelines.
Additionally, expert talks were delivered by Dr. Bindu Agrawal, Dr. Namrata Saxena, Dr. Sumit Mehta, Dr. Narayan Jeet Singh, Dr. Arpana Bhardwaj, Dr. A.V. Mathur, Dr. Puneet Ohri, and Dr. Shah Alam on ethics, patient rights, documentation, and clinical processes.
The stage anchoring was done by Dr. Megha Luthra. Dr. Lalit Kumar Varshney, Dr. Puneet Ohri and Dr. Anjali Chaudhary played key roles in the organizing committee, ensuring the smooth execution of the workshop.
The workshop proved to be an inspiring and enlightening platform for medical students, equipping them with ethical and professional values essential for becoming competent and compassionate healthcare providers in the future.
