Surgery

The Department of General Surgery at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital was established in the year2002 and is a busy academic and clinical unit of the hospital that caters to about20000 outpatients each year as well as undergraduate, postgraduate and paramedical students that are studying at the SGRR University.

The department with its five units provides care to surgical patients across the spectrum of diseases that encompass the discipline of General Surgery. The department has IPD bed strength of 150 beds and conducts average of 250 to 300major and minor surgeries per month.

Infrastructure

The operating area has two dedicated and well-equipped Operation Theatres in the OT complex with a stand-by emergency OT and a septic minor OT. Both major theatres have been provided with standard and specialized equipment such as the Stryker Laparoscopic Set, Hegar Lap stack, PRO-MIS Lap Stack, Ethicon harmonic scalpel that are used to conduct routine and advanced minimally invasive procedures. The dedicated team of 10 experienced OT technicians help in the smooth functioning of the operating area with special emphasis on maintaining cleanliness and surgical sterility. 

Clinical Services

Expeditious management of surgical emergencies like trauma and the acutely sick surgical patientis a strength of the department. The department along with its allied Anaesthesia and Critical care department provides surgical services to routine as well as high risk patients. The total 30 bedded surgical ICUs house the most critical of surgical patients where multidisciplinary approach of management, round the clock intensive monitoring and excellent nursing care provide the best achievable outcomes. 

Thespectrum of diseases that are being treatedin the department are the following:

  • Hepatobiliary Diseases like Liver Hydatid Cyst, Liver Abscesses, Gall bladder stones, CBD stones and strictures.
  • Surgical management of GI disorders such as acute intestinal perforation, bowel gangrene, acute intestinal obstruction, stomas and their management, intestinal bypass surgeries, appendix and its related disorders,oesophageal surgeries such as fundoplication for GERD.
  • Surgical management of all types of hernias by both open and minimally invasive techniques
  • Management of Anorectal diseases including minimally invasive procedure for hemorrhoids, rectal prolapse and fistula in ano treatment.
  • Disorders of the Pancreas, especially acute and chronic pancreatitis and disorders of the spleen. 
  • Management of Diabetic foot and limb gangrene.
  • Management of Blunt and Penetrating injuries especially to abdomen and chest.

However, the above list is not exhaustive. 

The department forms the nexus for surgical super specialties such as neurosurgery, urology, cardiothoracic vascular surgery, plastic surgery, oncosurgery and breast and endocrine surgery providing comprehensive tertiary level care of patients who require such consultations and interventions.

Academic Activities

The presence of distinguished faculty members and senior teachers in the department promotes high standardsin patient care and excellent learning opportunities for UG and PG students. The department has a current intake of 10 postgraduate students per year who are exposed early to high level of guided hands-on clinical training and graduated learning of operative skills over the3 years of residency.The department actively promotes academic activities in the form of daily UG and PG teaching by seminars, tutorials, case presentations, group discussions, journal clubs and live demonstrations on mannequins and patients. Research activities are vigorously promoted, trainees are guided to pursue clinical research, preferably prospective studies for their thesis dissertation.
